The Perfect Basic Cookie Recipe….

10/29/14

Sunday just past, felt like the first proper family Sunday we’ve had in our new home, in fact, for longer than that. I ended up not sitting down pretty much all day, because I wanted to squeeze as much out of it as possible. I mowed the lawn, put away the laundry that had sat there for two days, cooked brunch (the boys cleared up! Yay!), had some one to one time with the Little Tornado baking cookies (messy!!) and rustled up a beef and ale stew with giant Yorkshire puds for tea. Nom!

Elliott had a blast making these. Hilariously he hated getting his hands in there with the “sticky stuff”. So we settled for putting him in charge of flour and cutting out. He was visibly proud of himself when he tasted his cookies. Simple, delicious and very very moreish! I’m not really a baker. So I asked an acquaintance who is, for a simple, easy and delicious recipe for a basic biscuit/dough. Boy did he deliver! These have a lovely buttery melt in the mouth texture. Recipe below…

Basic Biscuit Dough

Ingredients
250g Butter
150g Caster Sugar
1 Egg Yolk
2tsp Vanilla Extraxt
300g Plain Flour

Method

  • Cream together the butter and sugar
  • Add the egg yolk and vanilla extract and combine well
  • Add the flour and mix to form a dough.
  • Roll out on a floured surface and cut out desired shapes
  • Place on a baking sheet covered in greaseproof paper. (These spread a little so leave space)
  • Bake each batch for approx 10-12mins in a pre heated oven at 180-200 degrees F.
  • Allow to cool/harden slightly on baking sheet for 5mins before transferring to a cooling rack
Enjoy!

DIY: Scrabble Fridge Magnets…!!

08/11/13

Turn Scrabble Tiles Into Fridge Magnets

We like us some Scrabble in this house. When my partners teenage son moved in, he brought with him his own Scrabble set. Since our old one had a few tiles missing (er one of them a “U” people! Which is super annoying when you end up with a “Q” in your selection!) I thought I’d indulge in a little repurposing.

From time to time, there’s a DIY that’s so simple that really it requires little or no words. Quite simply, Scrabble tiles + Superglue + Magnets……

Elliott was straight in there like a rat up a drainpipe. The good thing about these as opposed to the standard ABC fridge magnets you get, is that you have multiples of every letter. So not only are full words appearing on our fridge every time I walk past, but whole sentences too! (Not all of them fit for public viewing if J is involved. Do men ever grow up? πŸ˜‰ But Elliott at least can now spell his name because he finally has the 2 “L’s” and 2 “T’s” he needs!

I picked the magnets up on ebay for a mere £3.27 inc p&p and used all but 5. So that’s alotta letters! All I did was measure the diameter and depth of the indentation in the back of the tile (14mm x 3mm) and ordered my magnets to fit. Two words of caution. First, be patient and let the tiles dry properly before putting them on your fridge. (Wouldn’t want you to end up with a couple welded to your fridge; yep, I did that..). Secondly, be warned….you can easily lose an hour sat on the kitchen floor making up stupid phrases just for giggles……;)

May & June Round Up…& a bit of a life update…

07/17/13

At the beginning of May I started a monthly round up of my makes for the previous month. The idea being to  keep a track of my productivity that month. It’s so easy to lose track of what you have achieved. The plan was (and still is) to do one of these posts at the end of every month. However May and June proved to be a hectic couple of months; and this is the first chance I’ve had to take a look back. I made less than I thought I would; 8 in total over 8 weeks.  Although for 3 or 4 of those weeks I couldn’t sew a thing; but there’s a few reasons for that!

1,   2,   3,  4,  5,  6,  7.

May of course was the month of Me Made May which as predicted, prompted me to sew up a few more items to keep my challenge going. It was also the month I was prepping for The Refashioners 2013. June of course saw the series launched (a very exciting and resounding success!). Of course the first 2 weeks of June meant this blog was fully occupied showcasing all of those wonderful guest posts.

Family: I’d planned to use those 2 weeks to make, make and make. However life has away of throwing you curve balls. This one was a pretty major one. I’ve inherited a teenager! J’s 14 year old has moved in with us at very short notice. So we are now a family of 4! Which meant that May/June was spent remodelling our bungalow to create a 3rd bedroom, and redecorating all 3 bedrooms as a result plus sorting out a school, uniform, GP, dentist etc. So my making time went out of the window; and I’m slowly adapting to the sudden role of “step mum” to a teenage boy. At least I get some insight into this mysterious breed before Elliott hits that stage! Talking of which, Elliott finished pre-school last week (with a fantastic final assessment may I add. Proud mummy!) and starts at the local primary school in September. I actually got pretty choked up. That’s the thing with children. You’re excited and proud at every milestone they reach successfully; but also sad at leaving your little boy behind every time he takes another step forward. Sigh….

Television: Aside from that, I had a last minute day of filming in Bristol. Yes, the TV thing is still rolling on. Cripes it’s a long process! RiDICulously slow! Essentially, a final “yay” or “nay” from the network is imminent. (This week or next). I still don’t know which way it’s going to go. Either way though, it seems like there maybe “other” opportunities that this (and another) production company want to explore with me. It’s one of those things that I suspect will be bubbling away in the background for ages; and then will all of a sudden gather momentum and then be full on if and when something gets commisssioned.

Work: Before we had Elliott and J was floored by arthritis and successive surgeries; J and I were self employed. We bought and sold vintage clothing when Ebay was at it’s peak for such things. 2009 was a year when all that came crashing down. It was the year we had Elliott, lost our business, lost my Dad to cancer, couldn’t afford to keep our home, and J was bedridden for 6 months. It was the best year of my life in one way (because of Elliott); and worst year of my life in most others. We’ve kind of been licking our self employment wounds ever since then. Hesitant to get stung in that way again. BUT, we’re getting back in the game πŸ™‚ We’ve decided the time is right to have another stab at it. J has been made redundant twice in the past 12 months and “regular” jobs are scant. The TV work has re-awakened my/our love of hunting out treasures to buy and sell and reminded me that actually, I do have an instinct for these things. So we’re relaunching our business. Not on a grand scale (yet πŸ˜‰ but hopefully enough to support us all! The emphasis for me will always be vintage treasures. So look out for a relaunch of my Etsy shop in the not too distant future πŸ™‚

Blog:  This blog is becoming a bigger and bigger priority for me. Which I never envisioned when I opened a Blogger account in 2009. I didn’t even know what I was going to write when I signed up! Just felt like something I might enjoy. Fast forward to 2013 and this blog is really growing! So exciting! I am super proud to announce my first official sponsor in Victory Patterns. (See giant ad in sidebar!). Kristiann is soooo lovely and between us we have some fun sponsor posts planned over the next few weeks. In addition to that, I have some exciting collaborations in the works with some indie makers and bloggers and can’t wait to share them with you in the coming months!

So that’s where I’m at really. A little spontaneous “mid year” potted update!
How’s the first half of your year gone? Can you believe we’re halfway through another year already??!

A quick DIY for The Little Tornado….

08/24/12

Elliott has a great imagination for play. Really, you should hear some of the conversations his toys have with eachother, and he has a collection of voices that he uses too. So funny! Unfortunately I don’t have the same childlike imagination when it comes to pushing cars around on a rug! When he wanted to play with his collection of cars yesterday (inherited from his Dad, uncles, cousins, even some that belonged to his Grandfather) I found my mind drifting to what we could use as a road, when I had a bit of a eureka moment…

I dug out some gaffer tape and a couple of rolls of electrical tape from the shed….

We often use a bit of white furniture board (you know, the thin bendy board that is tacked to the back of cheap flat pack furniture) so that Elliott has a flat surface to do puzzles and drawing/painting etc. We don’t have room for a table in our house and this bit of board slides away under the sofa when not in use. It took me about 10 mins and a few strips of tape to whip up this little play road. Complete with road markings and zebra crossings…..

Elliott was ridiculously excited by something so simple and spent the next hour or so running Lego pedestrians over and causing pile ups at junctions. Such a gentle child….;)

Maldon Riverboat – The other side of Essex!

07/21/12

Just to prove that Essex isn’t all fake tan and high heels (!), it actually has some stunning rural and waterside locations too! Today we spent some time on a river boat cruise. Departing from Maldon’s Promenade Park, (only 20mins drive from our home) it takes in some spectacular views along the Estuary. And for once the sun was shining too!

We’re considering hiring a historical Thames barge as part of our nuptuals. So we thought we’d check out the kind of views our guests could expect. Elliott was definately sold on the idea after today!
Hope you’re having a lovely weekend and thankyou for all you kind wishes on our engagement πŸ™‚

A Rain Soaked Isle of Wight…

07/14/12

Whew! It may have been all quiet on the blogging front here, but it certainly hasn’t been all quiet on every other front. I have got so much to share with you guys that I’m going to have to do it on a post by post basis. Suffice to say, I have alot of exciting stuff going on right now, both at home, and potentially on the work front to. Lets just say that on Friday I took one step closer to potentially achieving my goal of using my creative skills on a daily basis. You will seriously squeal when you hear this. I just need to check how much I’m allowed to tell you before I go into any more detail!

In the meantime, we got back last week from a family holiday on the Isle of Wight. As you can imagine it chucked it down ALOT. But we made the best of it and had a lovely time on what (especially I’d imagine in the sun), is an absolutely beautiful place…

Jason was intent on playing captain of his very own 10ft dinghy with the able assistance of his teenage son…

On our second day there was a fabulous 1940’s Experience at the Southern Railway in Havenstreet. Loads to see and do, complete with Dad’s Army lookalikes, GI Joes and old school spivs flogging dodgy watches. Elliott especially loved the ride on the old steam train and I picked up some seriously cute vintage buttons from one of the stalls….

Then the weather began declining dramatically, but like typical Brits we were determined to enjoy the beautiful seaside locations…

The next day we braved “The Needles” park in Alum Bay. It was misty and wet but we pushed on and enjoyed a stroll around the park and enjoyed it’s many attractions. Including a nice and warm and cosy (!) glass blowing demonstraion and the obligatory making of sand ornaments, with Elliott insisting that he only wanted one colour of sand in his, he he!

The next day was pretty darn miserable weather wise. But we amused ourselves with a drive around the island and a trip across the floating bridge between East Cowes and Cowes itself. We found a fabulous venue at Quay Arts. It houses a gallery and exhibition areas, pleasant light and airy cafe, and a brilliant craft shop selling ceramics, prints, art glass and all manner of other handicrafts. Elliott amused himself with some wind up toys from the gift shop. I bagged a few art books and a kitsch but cute plastic brooch. We rounded of the day with takeaway cod and chips back at the holiday house…

Yay a day of sunshine at last! Like typical Brits we all managed to get a little burnt, but there was no way we were budging off that beach after the near constant rain we’d been experiencing. We collected shells, made sandcastles, skimmed stones and just chilled really. I messed about with making faces out of our beach finds and then tried my hand at a bit of sand sculpture too…..a 4 ft dolphin in case you can’t tell what it is lol!

All in all, I adored the Isle of Wght. Easy to get to. Loads to do and see. We’ll be back for sure but hopefully next time, a bit more sun please Mother Nature!!!!

Indian Summer…..

09/30/11

Something kind of wonderful is happening here in the UK. The beautiful weather we are experiencing (mother nature needs a new watch!) is all the more magical considering we are knocking on October’s door. Traditionally a time of pumpkins and pullovers. Us Brits are quick to take advantage of the merest hint of sunshine, so we didn’t hesitate to jumpin the car and head over to Southend on Sea for the afternoon. We made sandcastles, threw pebbles in the water, ate fish and chips and watched the sun go down….life is good πŸ™‚
