The Refashioners 2017 – Selmin

09/12/17

Yay! I was hoping a corduroy suit would creep into the mix at some point. (Linen suits, I’m looking out for you too!!)…The Refashioners 2017 - Selmin

Selmin’s corduroy jumpsuit is inspired! This is jumpsuit number 3 so far. (Liz & Gabby both tapped the trend too) and I suspect it won’t be the last. It seems suits lend themselves to becoming jumpsuits! 2 pieces become one.  Simples! But each of them is so different. Led by the source garment and suiting (pun) the style and aesthetic of the wearer perfectly! I bloody love this series!!

Loving the western styling to the back yoke here. The whole thing has a kind of luxe utilitarian feel about it….The Refashioners 2017 - SelminThe Refashioners 2017 - Selmin

As one brilliant comment on instagram has said….”you could take over the world in a jumpsuit like this”…The Refashioners 2017 - Selmin

Selmin has put together a video tutorial and full write up of this project for your delight and delectation! Full details are over on her blog.

09/11/17

Sewing producer and mastermind behind The Great British Sewing Bee, Claire-Louise up today, transforming a man’s suit into THIS! So MANY delicious details in this dress…The Refashioners 2017 - Claire-Louise

The original lapels flipped to the back to form a plunging V back. Love that draped and gathered front section…that’s the original CB seam of the jacket running across the front…The Refashioners 2017 - Claire-Louise

The party is definitely in the back here! Details of the original suit abound, cleverly incorporated as  subtle repurposed design details….The Refashioners 2017 - Claire-Louise

See that? That Lovely curved panel at the hem where the original button cuff doubles as a back split?! And the welt pocket positioned perfectly at the back hip?

The Refashioners 2017 - Claire-Louise

Clever, clever, CLEVER! If you want to see the before & in process photos of the draping process used to create this beauty,  full details are over on Claire-Louise’s blog.

The Refashioners 2017 – Liz

09/08/17

I’ve always loved Liz’s refashions. Always classy and on point ; and this one is no exception…The Refashioners 2017 - Liz

A sleek sophisticated jumpsuit with a fun and subtly sexy back detail. That split at the back? That’s the original back vent of the jacket right there. Clever no?!The Refashioners 2017 - LizThe Refashioners 2017 - LizI seriously love this. If you’ve got to dress for something formalish (it’s a word…..now) like an interview or business meeting; what a great alternative/twist on a boring suit !The Refashioners 2017 - Liz

If you’re intimidated by the thought of refashioning something as intricately constructed and complex as a suit, don’t be! At the end of the day, it’s all just fabric! Liz has a very intuitive approach to her refashions and a knack for making you feel, “ok! I could do that!” She’s put together a full step by step video tutorial for this refashion. Check it out here!

The Refashioners 2017 – Gabby

09/07/17

Every year I get a kick out of seeing the creativity that comes from working around the limitations and obstacles inherent in an existing garment.; and the different approaches  and styles that are borne from that.  Creativity and distinctive style are phrases that sum Gabby up for me…The Refashioners 2017 - Gabby

This jumpsuit and cape combo is so individual, theatrical and quirky and it just screams Gabby to me. Yet another thing I love to see in a reafshion. The expression of a individual’s style and persona…The Refashioners 2017 - Gabby

The pop of orange with the grey of the suit is a fantastic combo and that little nod to the origins of the source garment in retaining the button cuffs is so much fun…The Refashioners 2017 - GabbyA truly original piece of refashioning!

If you want to see the before & WIP photos, plus Gabby’s thought processes, I think you’ll really enjoy reading her blog post.  Including her trip to a Pimlico car boot sale, pattern sources and how the whole thing evolved. Full details are over on her blog.

The Refashioners 2017 – Jasika

09/06/17

If you follow this blog you’ll know I love me a kimono. So this kimono suit from Jasika? Right up my strata! The Refashioners 2017 - Jasika

Jasika has taken this suit from massive and masculine to unapologetically feminine in a fierce kinda way. Not just in the changes she has made construction wise, but in pairing it with a floral bustier. The juxstaposition of formal vs floral is just yum…The Refashioners 2017 - Jasika

And you gotta love a chunky gold zipper….The Refashioners 2017 - Jasika

The Refashioners 2017 - Jasika

She’s written the  most detailed and interesting blog post. One of the things I love about this challenge is the thought process and the changes of direction the limitations of an existing garment “force” you into; and the creativity those limitations can spark.

If you want to see the most hilarious and cheeky before photo I think I’ve ever seen (almost spat my coffee out) & in process photos, plus Jasika’s thought process as she worked through this refashion and overcame the obstacles and limitations that it threw at her;  full details are over on her blog.

As ever, stay tuned. We have a whole month of refashioning inspiration coming your way courtesy of a phenomenal line up of stitchers.

The Refashioners 2017 – Allie

09/05/17

Whenever I set the theme for a series of The Refashioners, I have pictures in my head of the kind of source garments that will crop up. Teal coloured suede suits? Didn’t see that one coming! The Refashioners 2017 - AllieThe Refashioners 2017 - Allie

But that’s exactly what Allie managed to lay her hands on. A vintage teal suede skirt suit with interesting applique details…The Refashioners 2017 - Allie

The Refashioners 2017 - Allie

She’s made very clever use of the existing darts and details to create a completely one of a kind pair of high waisted culottes. The fit on these is A1.  Seriously good! I’ve never sewn with suede before have you?

If you want to see the source garment (it’s a corker!) & Allie’s take on the challenge,  plus some more pics full details are over on her blog.

The Refashioners 2017 – Joost

09/04/17

Considering the contribution Joost made to last year’s series, I guess it should have come as no surprise that, yet again, the guy has gone above and beyond. And yet….when THIS arrived in my inbox….well…judge for yourself…The Refashioners 2017 - Joost

Suffice to say…gobsmacked. In a very, VERY good way! When I posed this challenge I didn’t expect “Zebra” to crop up as a source of inspiration, lol!

But humour me for a moment. Take a minute (or several) to absorb the striking visuals of this make and then…look past them…at the detail. Look closely at the photo below and you’ll see a patch pocket AND a welt pocket. Pattern matched and camouflaged within those zebra stripes…The Refashioners 2017 - Joost

Those stripes are irregular. Wavy. (Joost actually studied how a zebra’s stripes actually wrap around it’s torso in order to replicate them on this make). Which makes pattern matching across seams all the more tricky. Especially across a sleeve cap…and yet!!The Refashioners 2017 - Joost

There is SO much vision, skill, planning, and attention to detail in this jacket. I am genuinely at a loss for words… The Refashioners 2017 - JoostThe Refashioners 2017 - Joost

And just to prove Joost is not actually Mr Serious…LOVE this pic, lol! I am imagining his photographer directing him to “make like a zebra in the wild being chased down by lions”, ha ha! (Not sure if he actually meant for me to post this one or not. But my excuse is it’s also a very good angle to illustrate the thought that has gone into the placement of those stripes). The Refashioners 2017 - Joost

If you want to see the before & in process photos, ( and I strongly urge you to check this out in detail) plus Joost’s thoughts on the process, (and LOADS more pics) full details are over on Joost’s blog.

The Refashioners 2017 – Sasha

09/01/17

It’s here!! Today is the launch of The Refashioners 2017 #suitsyou. And kicking off proceedings, (like a boss) is Sasha….The Refashioners 2017 - Sasha

Sasha has borrowed some inspo from last years series and incorporated jeans into her refashion….The Refashioners 2017 - Sasha

The cut out back is so unexpected and ramps up the “edgy” factor of the overall look, and along with the addition of satin ribbon detailing and the shaping provided by the wrap back, brings some subtle femininty to what started as a very typical man’s suit…The Refashioners 2017 - Sasha

Nothing typical about it anymore! Proving that subtle reshaping and added details can really transform.

If you want to see the before & in process photos, plus Sasha’s thoughts on the process, (and some more of Sasha’s awesome photography which she just seems to nail EVERY.SINGLE.TIME) full details are over on her blog.

The Refashioners 2017: Blogger line up revealed…!!!

08/04/17

Announcing The Refashioners 2017!!!

So this is it! The countdown has begun once again people!!! For the entire MONTH of September (launches Fri 1st Sept) this blog will again play host to an awesome line up of makers ready to take on The Refashioners challenge!! What’s more, you can take part too and be in with a chance of winning a FANTASTIC prize. Your part of this challenge runs from the start of September right through until the end of October! More deets on that and how to enter in a future post coming soon. So stay tuned for that!)

For those of you unfamiliar with the challenge, (this is the 5th series) participants are challenged to refashion a garment for your delight and inspiration,  basically to highlight how cool, creative and ecologically and ethically sound refashioning old garments actually is. The kicker is, they don’t get to decide what that garment is. (insert evil laugh here) This year we’re tackling old suits. Yep, The Refashioners is all about all those unloved and out of style suits (think 80’s double breasted and you’re there)  languishing in wardrobes and charity shops everywhere, and showcasing some inspirational ways to reuse, rework, and reimagine the classic 2 piece suit. You can take a little peak at what we hope to achieve this year over on our dedicated pinterest board.

So without further ado and with mucho excitement, I am chuffed to pieces to  announce this years STELLAR line up!!!!

THE REFASHIONERS 2017 - BLOGGER LINE UP (1)

Beth Wood: Knitter. Dressmaker. Pattern designer. Art Director & Graphic Designer.  Blogger. I was fortunate to have the opportunity of hanging out with Beth when she was over in the UK last summer. A nicer lady you could not meet. You can find Beth on Instagram or via her site

Liz Bryson: Prolific and long time refashioner, stitcher and blogger. Liz’s blog is one of the very first I discovered back in the day and her refashions are always inspiring and always stylish. I think she must’ve finally forgiven me for the pair of leather trousers I made her refashion for our 2013 series (!) and she’s back again this year! Whoop! You can find Liz on Instagram and via her site

Joost de Cock: If you followed last year’s series then you were likely as blown away by Joost’s contribution as the rest of us. This guy is a bona fide genius. Stitcher. Shoemaker. Designer & coding genius behind makemypattern.com (soon to be freesewing.org). Fierce admiration for this guy. You can find Joost on Instagram or via his site.

THE REFASHIONERS 2017 - BLOGGER LINE UP (1)

Gabby Young: Stitcher. Knitter. Vlogger and Singer. My goodness what a voice too. (Seriously). On top of that the most infectiously upbeat and uplifting person you are likely to meet. Fact. You can find Gabby on Instagram or via her channel or music site

Elena Rosa Brown: Stalked this lady quietly for a while on IG, exchanging likes and the odd comment on each other’s posts. I love Elena’s pared back, laid back style and mindful approach to making. You can find Elena on Instagram or via her blog.

Sasha Werner: Knitter. Dressmaker. Pattern designer. Weaver. Photographer. Blogger. Basically, endlessly creative and talented. And did I mention stylish?? Like….ridiculously stylish.  Like….even in pyjamas. You can find Sasha on Instagram or via her site.

THE REFASHIONERS 2017 - BLOGGER LINE UP

Heather Lou: Prolific designer, maker, educator and founder of Closet Case Patterns. Probably single handedly responsible for making us all realise we CAN actually sew our own jeans. Dog Lover. Currently washing her dishes in her bathtub while she renovates her kitchen. And learns French. And runs her business.   You can find Heather Lou on Instagram or via her site
