Today we have Elisalex doing what Elisalex does best. Full on unapologetic girly glamour…

Taking her inspiration from the original refashionista Scarlet O’hara, and this amazing Dolce & Gabbana gown..

She took an ebay find of some Sanderson curtains…

And out came this!!

We’ve loosened up the brief this year to include thrifted textiles like curtains and bedding. It’s something I’ve been asked alot over the years. Whether it “counts” because it isn’t as challenging as working within the constraints of a garment when you have acres of fabric. Taking anything that is going unloved, unused or destined for landfill, and turning it into something this beautiful again? Yep. Counts in my book; and is very much in the spirit of what The Refashioners has always been about.  This year, we just really want you to go for it. The point this year is removing the constraints (we’ve constrained you enough over the years, lol!) and letting the creativity fly!

When I invited Mira to take part in this year’s series I did so because I suspected what we would get would be “outside the box”. I’ve long felt refashioning’s potential as a creative outlet is overlooked. So for today’s instalment Mira is taking us above and beyond simply making something to wear. This is refashioning as an art form and I am floored….

The garment is a mash up of inspiration taken from Comme de Garcon, Alexander McQueen and an old Cyd Charisse movie…

And this is the outcome of hours and hours of work and multiple processes…

The garment is inspired by Amazon series The Marvelous Mrs Maisel (I too can second Kate’s recommendation of this as box set binge!)

Starting point was this trench from Kate’s local charity shop…

Which she deconstructed and reconstructed to fit her interpretation of the inspo image. (Is it me or should she be sitting on a bench reading a newspaper with spy holes cut out for the eyes? 😉 )

Up next is Kate.  Kate’s base garment is actually a previous “me made” two piece ensemble from the Japanese Pattern book Stylish Party Dresses by Yoshiko Tsukiori. The fabric was originally  second hand fabric, scored in her local charity shop  which makes this a double whammy for refashioning and thrifting!

Her inspiration was this dress was worn by Zoé Colotis, lead singer of the French electro swing band, Caravan Palace during a performance on Jools Holland’s New Year television special .

I think she’s done a brilliant job of recreating this look using an existing handmade garment! Those ruffles and that fit!

Refashioned from a thrifted oversized leather jacket from the 90s and a floor-length ponte maxi dress. Just wait until you see the before pic of the dress.

The only supplies not repurposed for this project were thread and Wonder Tape.

Princess seams have proved time and again to be a refashioners friend due to the way the garment is broken down into much smaller pattern pieces. Perfect when you are playing fabric tetris with existing garments!
